You likely don't have enough memory and are paging memory to the paging file. You should provide information about what applications are running on the server, amount of physical memory, available memory and page file usage.
My backup targets are bigger arrays, 16 drive RAID 10 affairs, so likewise a queue length of 20 wouldn't be worrying. The reason I ask is I've seen 24 drive arrays of little GB or 1.
If you have 4 drives in a RAID5 and they're nearline 3. What kind of controller is it on? I've been using capacitor backed controllers since , 4GB of cache or more can really help with cushioning the blow of heavy disk usage. If you don't already have a large power backed cache on your controller, it might be helpful to add one. It shouldn't be too expensive, unless you have zero budget. As a more radical change, if you don't need that much disk space, you could reconfigure the array to RAID10 and see a dramatic improvement in array performance.

You're getting quite a few cache misses. This would lead me to wonder if you've enough memory assigned to ASE. On windows with ASE Am in particular interested in this line:.
It's possible that you may have enough memory assigned to ASE, but you've not added it to the data cache. You can see from the start of the sysmon output that your CPUs are spending most of their time dealing with IO:. You also only have 2 engines assigned to ASE, on a dual dual-core you can go up to 4 if this is a dedicated server.
Although your licensing may not permit this, as ASE is licensed per core. The scale is set to graph it at x the value. You could try this optimizing tool to help track and troubleshoot the issue, it has a 14 day trial. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top.
