JdRavnos Geek Visionary. Validated User. Gamespy recently did a list of the 25 most overrated games but I presume you knew that since you clicked on the topic. Some of them are obvious, but some of these seem to be chosen for shock value.
Personally I lean towards Penny Arcade's always humerous take on it. While there ARE a few deserved spots there, for the most part if you played all of the games on that list, you'd have played some really, really good games.
Then again, ever since Gamespy went from a nifty little utility you could use to find Quake servers to the bloated, multifaceted thing it is now it's been pretty much worthless.
Fileplanet is the only thing I ever go to of the gamespy group. CMS New member. That alone marks them as vicious pod people here to eat babies and stamp out funk music.
They also said that Daikatana was overrated. Daikatana was universally regarded as the Battlefield Earth of video games, and it was overrated? They had a few hits. Morrowind didn't get the criticism or praise it really deserved.
You can make a valid case I'm willing to do so on demand that Halo is overrated. It's a nontrivial game, but it receives hype beyond its virtues. Frankly, I'd rate this article as above average as Gamespy's editorial content goes. They just don't write articles with a whole bunch of depth. If you're going to pan nine year old games, why not generate some real content.
Write an article, not about how to put together a great gaming machine for way too much money, but rather about the evolution of CRPGs and what features have made for large strides forward. Go ahead and start having "unknown developer of the week" features. Start hiring better writers, people who are distinguishable not merely by their avatars, but by what they think and write.
Most importantly, stop pandering to self-styled hardcore video gamers while explaining everything so simplistically that a mysteriously ressurected Ghengis Kahn could not only understand what kind of a game Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is, he could also see that you've been giving Interplay a steady diet of blowjobs and undeserved good press in return for sweet, sweet crack cocaine.

After Six, it just wasn't Final Fantasy. The villain was an emotionless, easilly predictable idiot that just happened to look bad ass and have a cool sword. Give me Kefka's crazy ways any day Ivy it's not easy being easy Validated User. I think the writers of that article were a bit confused about what they wanted to write - some of the games are there because they're overrated, while others were merely overhyped before the release and now universally reviled.
Yes, it's overrated. The list is fine. Join Date: Member: Members. If it was top 25 overhyped, Daikatana would be farther towards 1 if not THE 1 on the list. Quake 2: Face the facts, Quake 2 wasn't the revolutionary game we tried to justify it to be.
Because given enough time after the overzealous review writers were done, people more importantly, modmakers came to their senses and realized ID could--and should--have done better. An admittedly great-looking one considering it was on the SNES, but it didn't deserve as much praise as it got, because it honestly wasn't that much better than others in the genre. Can anyone say Metroid Series? Mario series?
Thank you. Battletoads: I think the description GameSpy gave for this one was quite good. But overpraised in the process. Super Mario Sunshine: same situation for me as FF7. My friend works on a DS mod, and his latest build has all the coolest crap in it, flame armor, set items from diablo , and other excellent stuff.
I rather enjoyed PA's take on the subject They're not saying that these aren't good games, just that they get more praise than they deserve.
And they're right about it too. Being ticked off because they put your favorite on the list just won't cut it. I notice that GameSpy's public image is suffering more and more from the "Microsoft" syndrome. They are big, so they must be evil. I have to agree with them on FF7 as the only reason most people said it was so good was because it was the first FF game most of them played, and that FF8 sucked so hard.
Saying it was the best FF game just goes to show that they didn't play the snes version and that the later ones in the series were just huge disapointments.
I was sorely dissappointed too, I know many people are upset about donkey kong country being on the list. But without the graphics the game isn't even a game, it's an intricate dance. The entire game can be cleared using no more skill than it takes to tap your foot on beat. Enemys just perform there timed pattern of moves and really weren't any trouble at all. I play donkey kong country every weekend with my friends.
Record time: 56 minutes. Edit:Have I had too many beers? You're in disagreement with the public view. If the games on that list were fine for you, then all's good that's what GS said too. However, for most people they weren't. FF 7 should have been higher. That game ruled. Those mutinous dogs! I disagree with Halo being overrated. I played it, I got my friends to play NeverWinter Nights wasn't overrated And btw.
So did all of you actually read the article, beyond just running down the list? I'm guessing not. The list is meant to reflect games that were "overrated", not "sucky". They said themselves that lots of the games on the list were quite good; they just didn't live up to all the hype. And they admitted themselves that in many cases they were parties to that hype. I myself was enraged by the inclusion of American McGee's Alice, at least at first, but on reading the actual article, I agreed with them that the gameplay wasn't as revolutionary as many of its other aspects.
They basically said that they liked the game, it just wasn't the be-all-end-all of games as it was hyped up to be. I'd have to agree with monse. Q2 was a cash in. I'm debating DOOManiac Worst. Most of them on the list I agree with, but like many of you.
WTH are any of these doing on the list? I Loved all these games. Yes even Quake 2. And as much as it hurts to say so, yeah, Metal Gear Solid 2 does deserve that 2nd place Mortal Kombat 3 9.
Final DOOM yes this is being posted by the right person 8. Final Fantasy 8 7. Halo 6. Tomb Raider 5. Unreal 4.
